Jyotish terms in plain language.

Short definitions for the terms that appear across Kundli reports, matching, timing, remedies, and palm-to-chart reading.

Lagna

The ascendant or rising sign. It begins the house sequence and anchors the chart.

Rashi

A zodiac sign. In Jyotish, signs describe the style and condition of planetary expression.

Sidereal Zodiac

The zodiac framework used in Jyotish after applying ayanamsa to account for precession.

Tropical Zodiac

The seasonal zodiac framework used as an astronomy-facing reference before sidereal conversion in the engine audit trail.

Ayanamsa

The offset used to convert tropical longitude into sidereal longitude. PanditOne defaults to Lahiri unless another supported setting is supplied.

Julian Day

A continuous astronomical day count used to calculate planetary positions from a precise universal time.

Whole-Sign Houses

A house approach where the ascendant sign becomes the entire first house and each following sign becomes the next house.

Ephemeris

A source of astronomical planetary positions used by the calculation engine.

Mean Lunar Node

A smoothed calculation of Rahu and Ketu's nodal axis, used by the engine as the node mode.

Graha

A planet or chart function used in Jyotish. The nine grahas are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu.

Nakshatra

A lunar mansion used for Moon-based interpretation, dasha calculation, and compatibility factors.

Pada

One of four divisions inside a nakshatra. Padas refine nakshatra interpretation and connect to Navamsa logic.

Dasha

A planetary period system used to understand which chart themes are emphasized over time.

Mahadasha

The major dasha period. It sets the broad chapter of life timing.

Antardasha

A sub-period inside the Mahadasha, used for more specific timing emphasis.

Pratyantar

A smaller sub-period inside Antardasha, used for shorter timing windows.

D1

The main birth chart, also called Rashi chart. It is the foundation for interpretation.

D9

The Navamsa divisional chart, often used for dharma, maturity, and relationship depth.

D10

The Dasamsa divisional chart, used for career and public contribution.

Varga

A divisional chart layer derived from dividing a sidereal sign into smaller portions.

South Indian Chart

A chart display tradition where zodiac signs stay fixed and houses are counted from the Lagna marker.

North Indian Chart

A chart display tradition where houses stay fixed and signs are placed into those houses from Lagna.

Panchanga

A five-limb Vedic calendar context often including tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, and weekday.

House Lord

The planet ruling the sign placed in a house. It carries that house topic into its own placement.

Dispositor

The sign lord hosting a planet. It influences how the placed planet can express itself.

Dignity

A planet's condition by sign, such as exalted, debilitated, own sign, friendly, neutral, or inimical.

Exaltation

A sign placement where a planet is traditionally considered especially capable of expressing its function.

Debilitation

A sign placement where a planet may need more maturity, support, or structure to express cleanly.

Combustion

A condition where a planet is close to the Sun and may have reduced independent expression.

Retrograde

An apparent backward motion that can intensify, internalize, revisit, or complicate a planet's expression.

Aspect

A planetary influence or glance connecting planets and houses.

Karaka

A natural significator for a topic, such as Venus for relationship or Saturn for duty and labor.

Ashtakoot

An eight-factor compatibility method that produces a score out of 36.

Manglik

A relationship pressure pattern involving Mars in specific houses, requiring careful chart-wide review.

Nadi

A heavily weighted Ashtakoot factor connected to nakshatra-based vitality categories.

Bhakoot

An Ashtakoot factor based on Moon sign relationship, often reviewed for family and prosperity concerns.

Yoga

A chart combination that may show a recurring pattern or potential when supported by strength and timing.

Transit

The current movement of planets through signs and houses, read against the natal chart and dasha.

Sade Sati

Saturn's transit through the sign before the Moon, the Moon sign, and the sign after the Moon.

Remedy

A tradition-based support such as behavior, service, mantra, color, or carefully reviewed gemstone guidance.

Gemstone

A stronger tradition-based planetary support that should be considered only with qualified chart review.

Life Line

A major palm line read for vitality rhythm, grounding, and recovery habits, not lifespan.

Head Line

A major palm line read for thinking style, decision rhythm, and concentration.

Heart Line

A major palm line read for emotional expression, relationship expectations, and communication of feeling.

Fate Line

A palm line read for work direction, responsibility, and role-building when visible.
